2026–2027 Substitute Teacher

The Island School is seeking dependable, flexible, and student-focused Substitute Teachers to provide a positive and engaging learning environment when classroom teachers are away. Successful candidates are passionate about working with students, adaptable to a variety of grade levels and subjects, and committed to supporting the school's mission and educational philosophy.

Position Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of School, the Substitute Teacher will:

  • Implement lesson plans and classroom instructions provided by the regular teacher.
  • Create a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment that encourages student engagement.
  • Adapt instructional approaches to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Assign and monitor classwork and homework as directed.
  • Maintain effective classroom management and reinforce school expectations for student behavior.
  • Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, or other assigned duties.
  • Safeguard the well-being of students while ensuring the proper use of classroom materials and school property.
  • Communicate with school administrators regarding classroom activities or any issues that arise during the school day.
  • Follow school policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.
  • Model professionalism, integrity, collaboration, and a commitment to The Island School's mission and values.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess:

  • Flexible availability from August through May.
  • Workday availability from 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for working with children and adolescents.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective classroom management and organizational abilities.
  • Comfort using educational technology and standard computer applications.
  • The flexibility to work in different classrooms and adapt to changing daily assignments.
  • A bachelor's degree; prior teaching or substitute teaching experience is preferred.

Employment Details

This is a temporary, non-exempt, as-needed position. Work schedules vary based on the school's substitute staffing needs and teacher absences throughout the academic year.
